memorial dayOn this day, we remember all members of the United States Armed Forces that sacrificed their lives for our country.  This makes it quite distinct from Veterans Day, which is set aside to remember everyone, living or deceased, that have served in this country’s military.

The sacrifice of one’s life for his or her fellow citizens is the ultimate sign of love for one’s country.  The Gospel of John records Jesus telling His disciples during the Last Supper, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

As we celebrate today, in whatever fashion we have chosen, let us remember those valiant souls which gave all for our liberty.  At times, we may be asked to sacrifice in much smaller ways in order to preserve our Republic, whether it’s taking time to vote in an election, donating money to those causes which seek to preserve the essential elements of our democracy, or simply helping our neighbors when they are in need.  No matter how big or small, all such efforts maintain the fabric of our great nation.

May God continue to bless our great nation, and may he give repose to the souls of all men and women that have shown the greatest of love for their fellow Americans.
